Tis The Season For Unnecessary Inductions

I wanted to write about an important reminder- this one is for you if you're estimated "due date" is the end of this year or the very beginning of next... ie: the holiday season.

If you're having your baby during this time, you are in for such a treat 🤩 I've always considered the holidays to be a beautiful time to have a baby... the cozy twinkle lights, Christmas trees, a focus on spirituality, and generally positive feelings.... all wonderful things for bringing your baby into the world!

But there is one thing you need to watch out for. Unnecessary inductions.

The fact is that the least births of the entire year are on:

-December 24th, 25th, &26th (Christmas time)

-January 1st & 2nd, (New Year)

-July 4th (independence day)

-and various late November dates (thanksgiving)

And the most are in the days preceding these holidays (compared to the rest of these months).

But babies don't have calendars... they have no idea what day is a holiday and what day isn't!

Your doctor (or midwife) may want to induce you in order to avoid being called in on a holiday.

But they won't tell you that of course! They will say...

“Your placenta is aging”

"You need an induction for GD”

“Baby is too big”

“Fluid is a little low”

“Blood pressure seems a bit high”

Many of these reasons are not always true emergencies, especially without other risk factors.

You can always ask for a second opinion if you think your provider may be doing this and you are worried about it.

And when it comes to inductions- remember that it is always your choice! You don't have to schedule and induction, and even if you do (or your provider does it for you) you do NOT have to show up.

Follow your intuition and maybe question it just a bit more than you would have if you are being told you need to be induced right before the holiday.
